What is women’s liberation? A revenge upon Patriarchy or simply, allowing women to enjoy the human rights they are entitled to. It started during the world war. When most of the men in many countries went to the war, the result was : widows, children without fathers and mothers without their sons. This led to women working in different sectors. With time and modernization, this move spread across the world. In many cultures, it is still not prevalent but a change comes with time. It takes a whole generation to bring a change. We have lived in a patriarchal society for way too long and the transition in the position of women in society is not liked by some. The orthodox mind-set of these people has lead people to believe that it is a revenge on patriarchy. There are many underlying reasons behind it.In many cultures, it is believed that a woman’s duties in a society was to bear and raise children and to carry out other household duties. There were not many jobs for women. They were supposed to find a suitor to marry. Even on their marriage a hefty sum of money, dowry was/is to be given. This led to people killing their own daughters before or after birth. Under these circumstances, if she became a widow or wanted a divorce, how would she have taken up the responsibility to raise her children? Under such situations, not only was she financially unstable but also didn’t get the respect. They were not even given right to property. Is this the kind of society any of us want to turn back to? Even in countries where one can say women are liberated, women aren’t. The facts show that the percentage of women who graduate from Ivy League law schools, business schools and medical schools is much higher that the percentage of women who happen to reach high positions in a companies and firms. Some might argue that they leave their jobs to raise their children. But why would they leave their jobs after spending so much on the Ivy League schools? The reason behind decline in number of women working in high positions is because of workplace harassment which makes them leave their respective jobs after a point of time. The points raised above certainly suggest that “Women’s liberation, rather than being a revenge on patriarchy, is the need of the society.” Therefore, every necessary step must be taken so that every woman gets what she deserves.
