Language is an integral part of human life. The ability to speak and express ourselves i.e., verbal form of communication is something that separates us from other living organisms. Language has a key role in shaping the modern human society. The purpose of language is not only communication but to make us cultured and organised. Every society, ethnicity, religion and nation have their language and this is what is common among all human beings irrespective of their geographical location, economical condition or class. It is literally impossible to imagine a world without verbal communication.
Without the existence of language, literature wouldn’t exist. And without literature our society wouldn’t be the same as it is today. Poems, stories, books etc. have been an important part of every culture and religion. It has helped many people to see the true society, fight for a change and realise the injustice that exists. It is the biggest purpose of language and goes beyond just communication and expression of emotions.
Language is a medium to express our thoughts to others, to communicate and convey our feelings to other people and it doesn’t matter which language is spoken as long as the main purpose is achieved. Sadly, we live in a society where English is considered as a status symbol and communicating in other Indian languages is frowned upon. We fail to understand that there is NO superior or inferior languages and people should be allowed to express their opinions whatever they feel comfortable with. Every language has its own beauty and it shouldn’t be imposed on people. People really need to change their mind set and cherish the lingual diversity existing in society.
